If your carpets are just wet from the flooding, you may not need the brigade. If the water that did the flooding is clean, then a professional carpet cleaner has the kit that can do the job.
Assuming you’ve stopped any further flow of water (or called a plumber), what’s needed is to first the get the water out of the carpet. Then, you need to get the carpet back dry as quickly as possible.
If carpets or floors need water extraction from flooding or a leak, a company like ours would extract the water only at this point by use of a wand system.
In the case of carpets, the carpet would need to be lifted, in order to dry somewhere. The underlay would be binned and replaced, then sub flooring would need time to dry out with use of big dehumidifiers.

Ultimately your priority here is to get the water out and save the house. If the water that’s done the flooding is dirty, like sewerage or river water, then that’s when the fire brigade comes in and the job becomes a clean-up rather than just a water extraction.
If you are certain the water is clean, then definitively call a plumber and a pro carpet cleaner first and leave the brigade to the bigger jobs.
How long will it take to extract the water?
Of course, this depends on the size of the carpet affected and how many rooms, but an average size bathroom and bedroom for example would take about 4 hours.
How long will it take for my carpets to be dry
Usually 4-5 hours or overnight. The very best scenario is to lift them up (and the underlay), and get them outside to dry. Of course, that’s weather depended and you will only end up with dry carpets not clean carpets. You should then have them cleaned.
What can’t a carpet cleaning company extract dirty water or sewerage?
The pro cleaner will not want contaminated water in their kit as it will damage the system. This is where the fire brigade would come in with specialist equipment.
What if there are problems during or after the water extraction?
As long as the initial cause of the flood or leak has been diagnosed and rectified by a plumber, then the only concern will be getting the place dry (water extracted, carpet uplifted and room aired).
Will the carpet shrink?
If the water is extracted as soon as possible, then there shouldn’t be any shrinkage. Wool carpets will soak up water and if left wet will shrink.

Yes, it can as long as the water is extracted as soon as possible.
What if there are stains or smells left behind?
When you mix excess water with furniture legs, say wooden bed posts or metal table legs, the water will bleed the dye from the wood or rust the metal. This in turn can leave stains in your carpet. It is also possible that there may be a slight smell in the carpet fabric upon drying. Both of these areas of concerns can be taken care when the carpet is dry with many stain removal processes or carpet deodorisation.
Why can’t you clean the carpet at the same time as extracting the water?
Extract, uplift and air – there is no point in extracting water from a flooded carpet and then cleaning it straight after if the underlay and/or sub floor are still soaking wet. This will only cause a bigger problem especially the smell. The underlay is now a wet sponge trying to dry between the carpet backing and subfloor and when stagnant water is trapped, well it smells like a tom cat has urinated in the house and if anyone has had this problem then they will never forget that smell.
How much will it cost to extract the water?
Some cleaning companies may have a fixed rate or minimum charge so always check first. If they operate on an hourly basis, then rates are typically upward of £100 per hour and subject to your location etc. Any less than that then one might question the quality of the service or equipment used. Also, if your ‘emergency’ is out of office hours, at weekends (or in the middle of the night) some companies may not be able to respond, or even operate in those hours, so except to pay a premium for those that do.
Would the cleaning company be insured if they damage the carpet?
If your carpet is flooded then it is already damaged, so the carpet cleaning company is certainly not liable and you should check with them what guarantees they are offering for a water extraction.
Do I need to tell my insurance company?
You may well be covered for water extraction, so check your policy or talk it through with your insurer.
